Some 89 percent of Americans use smartphones. Many of them buy cases for their phones, hoping to protect their expensive devices from harm. But it’s the users who need better protection.

A new EWG analysis of data submitted to the Federal Communications Commission by one manufacturer shows that some cases on the market are so poorly engineered that they actually intensify the radiation that strikes a user’s head and body. Cases may also weaken the signal, deplete the phone’s battery sooner and cause dropped calls. The data are based on studies by Pong Research Corp., an Encinitas, Calif., company that makes cases designed to minimize cell phone radiation exposure. Pong’s research indicates that badly designed cell phone cases can partially block a phone’s antenna, making the device work harder to transmit signals. Due to gaps in the FCC’s cell phone regulations, a phone worn right next to the body and enclosed by a case that obstructs the antenna could expose the user to more radiation than the FCC’s legal limit.

DOES THE PONG’S “INTELLIGENT ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY” WORK?

To minimize radiation distortion by phone cases, Pong Research designed a case with a built-in antenna that directs the emissions away from the user’s head or body and toward the cell tower, to both improve signal quality and lower radiation exposure (German 2011).

Pong’s claims for its case have stood up to the scrutiny of Wired magazine and the Better Business Bureau (Advertising Self-Regulation Council 2012; Ganapati 2009). In tests conducted by Cetecom, a cell phone radiation certification lab, and observed by a reporter from Wired magazine, an iPhone 3G tested without a case had a maximum SAR of 1.18 W/kg when held at the ear. The same phone tested with a Pong case had a maximum SAR of 0.42 W/kg (Ganapati 2009). EWG met with representatives of Pong Research and fully agrees with its business premise that cell phone cases should decrease, not increase, radiation exposure. Pong hopes to carve out a niche by selling cases that lower the phones’ radiation exposure. We anticipate that as awareness of the potential risks of cell phone radiation grows, Pong and other companies will respond by marketing cell phones and cases that offer users good communication with less radiation.

CELL PHONE RADIATION PROTECTION – DO AIR TUBE HEADSETS WORK?

Updated: 12 September 2017. Cell phones emit electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

How Does An Air Tube Headset Work? A conventional headset has a wire cable. Wire has metal in it. This metal conducts the radiation coming from your cell phone allowing it to easily travel up the wire and into your head. Wired headsets can act as an antenna attracting ambient EMFs, transmitting radiation directly to your brain, thereby increasing your exposure. The air tube headset uses hollow air tubes to conduct the sound from your cell phone, or other device, using “sound waves”. For the Kinden low radiation air tube headset I’m reviewing today, the manufacturer claims a 98% reduction in electromagnetic fields (EMFs).

Can An Air Tube Headset Reduce Radiation? An air tube cell phone headset allows you to put distance between you and your cell phone. It’s this distance that reduces your radiation exposure.

That’s the theory. Actually its a bit more than theory. The manufacturer has had their product tested at the Shanghai Institute of Measurement and Testing Technology – I share the test report in the video. This testing shows 98% shielding effectiveness. Sounds too good to be true? There are some downsides.

What Are The Downsides? Let’s look at the downsides of the Kinden low radiation airtube headset:

Sound quality? I’ve tested the Kinden headset and compared it with 2 other regular headsets. The sound quality is not as good as my Mac headphones (which cost considerably more) but its just as good as my regular headphones.
Durability? The air tube is a ‘tube’ and not a wire. You need to handle it with care. A tube doesn’t fold away as easily as a wire. If you kink it, it can damage it. Having said that I’ve no problems in the 3 or 4 days I’ve been testing them.
Hassle? This is a gripe about headsets generally. Cell phones are getting smaller and smaller and easier and easier to use. Using a headset adds a level of hassle to answering and making calls. Either you’ve got the wires hung around your neck or you’ve got them nearby so that you can plug them into your phone at a moments notice.

Should You Buy It? If you are using a cell phone for speaking, using an air tube headset is a no-brainer. The Kinden low radiation airtube headset, for the price (currently around $20), offers a very good value for money. Note: because it has a standard jack fitting you can also use on other devices like an mp3 player or computer.

Firstly, a word of warning. ‘If you do buy one, buy it for the right reasons.

An air tube headset does not make your cell phone safe. FACT.

BUT it can make your cell phone safer.

IF when you call you put a good distance between your phone and your head.

AND you don’t up your cell phone usage because you’ve bought an air tube headset.
